An Architectural and Cultural Project of Excellence

Located on the waterfront in the historic Belém area, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology brought with it a new lease of culture as well as being a welcome addition to the Lisbon landscape. The variety of programmes and spaces provided in the building, along with its privileged view of the city and river, have meant it has quickly become a must-see on any cultural itinerary of the city.

Designed by Amanda Levete Architects, this innovative building establishes a communication between a new building and the Tejo Power Station, one of the most notable examples of industrial architecture in the country, dating back to the early 20th century.

Designed to host numerous national and international exhibitions set to draw together art, architecture, and technology, the MAAT simultaneously offers a 360º panoramic view of the river and the city on its rooftop, which has been converted into a viewpoint. The building's wave-shaped, reptile-textured structure is covered with three-dimensional tiles that reflect natural light, making it a truly unique design.

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology won several awards in 2017, some international, reflecting recognition of the structure as an architectural and cultural project of excellence. The following awards are of particular note: The Design Prize 2017, awarded by renowned digital architecture and design magazines Designboom and Abitare, The Best Museum Architecture of the Year as part of the Leading Culture Destination Awards, The Best of Best of the Iconic Award 2017 by the German Design Council, the Best Private Project by the Construir Awards 2017 and the Art and Culture Trophy as part of the Marketeer Awards 2017.

A wide range of Cimpor solutions was used for this iconic project, which was brought to life by Construtora Alves Ribeiro, providing a high quality, strong, durable infrastructure.

In this context, the materials used for the construction included cement CEM II/A-L 42.5R, such as Mortars and Flexible Cement based Tile Adhesive, of which AA M5 and FVHB were used to lay the masonry, AREPH for the plaster, and ARP12 for screeds throughout the site.

In addition toready-mix concrete supplied by Construtora Alves Ribeiro, lightweight concrete with EPS, that is, a special lightweight, low-strength concrete containing crushed expanded polystyrene - was provided by Betão Liz, a Cimpor Group company.
